Concept: Stars of Stripes
Created for the USA Rugby Sevens team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Stars of Stripes is a pair of graphics that looked to tap into American patriotism. This unique design plays on the iconic “Stars and Stripes,” whilst blending U.S. culture with elements inspired by the host nation, Japan.
Design Development
At the heart of the design is an all-over pattern that reinterprets the iconic stripes of the U.S. flag to form a repeating star motif. The pattern consists of two stars: an outer star in positive space and a smaller, inner star in negative space. Together they create a visually dynamic and structured design. To add depth, the pattern is further layered with additional stripes filling any gaps left by the stars, disguising them somewhat.
Two versions of the pattern were developed:
Version 1 – A clean, crisp execution designed for on-field performance. Used by Canterbury for the match kits
Version 2 – A variation incorporating a subtle nod to Japanese culture. Used by Canterbury for a training jersey.
Both versions were produced in two colorways:
White & Grey - Home Kit
Navy & Red - Away Kit
Japanese Influence – Shodō
A key cultural link to Japan was introduced on version 2 through the application of Shodō, the traditional Japanese art of calligraphy. Shodō is characterized by expressive, flowing brushstrokes that convey energy and intention. This technique was subtly embedded into the Stars of Stripes pattern, giving the training jersey an organic, handcrafted feel that connects the design to the Olympic host nation while maintaining the strong identity of USA Rugby.
Beyond the Olympics
Originally developed for just the USA Rugby Sevens team at the Tokyo Olympics, the Stars of Stripes design resonated strongly with USA Rugby. As a result, both home and away colorways were adopted by both men’s and women’s 15s teams, extending the design’s impact beyond the Olympics for the remainder of Canterbury’s contract with USA Rugby.
